A fines de la década de 1950, una mujer llamada Agnes se acercó al Centro Médico de UCLA en busca de una cirugía de reasignación de sexo. Su historia fue considerada excepcional y singular hasta que se encontraron archivos de casos nunca antes vistos de otros pacientes en 2017.

In the late 1950s, a woman named Agnes approached the UCLA Medical Center seeking sex reassignment surgery. Her story was long considered to be exceptional and singular until never-before-seen case files of other patients were found in 2017.

Joynt and sociologist Kristen Schilt met in 2002 while studying at UCLA. Framing Agnes extends from their 2014 Mellon Foundation Fellowship at the University of Chicago’s Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry. Their book-in-progress, Conceptualizing Agnes, disrupts dominant legacies of medical expertise about transgender identities.
